  "You speak English so well!" I’ve heard that more times than I can count. And every time, I wonder—what exactly did you expect? As a Korean American living in Michigan, I’ve gotten used to certain assumptions people make. Most of them aren’t meant to be hurtful. But still, they stay with you. So here are a few things I’ve heard over the years… and what I really think when I hear them.

Fortunately, there are wonderful restaurants here that bring a true taste of Korea closer to home. Growing up, dishes like kimchi stew (kimchi jjigae), bulgogi, and rice cakes (tteokbokki) were more than just meals—they were a source of warmth and comfort, especially during cold Michigan winters. In this post, I’d like to share some of my favorite Korean comfort foods that continue to bring a sense of home, no matter where I am.
